This is written as a series of Dream Interpretation Helps concerning dreams from God. I will cover the things that I feel are mandatory for correct dream interpretation and application of the truths revealed in the dream. All scripture references are NASB, unless otherwise noted. Emphases are mine. © 2013, 2022 Elizabeth Elam. All rights reserved.
WE NEED THE HOLY SPIRIT’S HELP
It would be a big mistake to think you can interpret a dream on your own without the Holy Spirit’s inspiration. Even if you know what the symbols used by the Lord often mean, be aware that in the Bible the same symbol has meant different things, depending on the context. Often, the Lord puts the ‘key’ (like a legend on a map) within the dream itself that will identify the proper meaning of particular symbols.
Pray like Daniel did for the Lord to reveal the meaning of the dream. Lay the dream before the Lord. If He gave the dream, He wants you to understand it. If you don’t hear Him speak or if He doesn’t impress something upon you right away, don’t force the dream open on your own. Wait on the Lord. Ignore any pressure from yourself or others. Search the Scriptures as God leads to find the same theme or symbol in a scripture or parable of Jesus or in the Old Testament. It is sometimes helpful to share the dream with a mature Christian who the Lord leads you to, just as the kings went to the prophets.
